Human exosomes
Exosomes are endosomal-derived vesicles containing complex nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and metabolites. They play a key role in cell-to-cell communication and signal transduction and aresecreted in various biological fluids including cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, ascites, urine, and serum amongst others. Exosomes are small (approximately 40-160 nm in diameter, 100 nm on average) with a distinctive bilipid protein structure. They can carry and exchange a variety of cargos between cells and are used as non-invasive biomarkers for several diseases. Due to their unique characteristics, exosomes are considered the best biomarkers for cancer diagnosis. Exosomes derived from various sources have been used in research related to the prognosis and diagnosis of a variety of diseases including cardiovascular and degenerative diseases, arthritis, diabetes mellitus, neurological diseases as well as cancers.
